    Initially the Institute of Machine Mechanics was founded in 1960 on the base of Machine Building and Heat Engine Laboratories at the Institute of Metallurgy of the Georgian Academy of Sciences on initiative of Academician R. Dvali and V. Makhaldiani. In 1994 it was named after Acad. R. Dvali.
    Directors of the Institute were: Cand. of Technical Sciences G. Ambokadze (1959-60), Cand. of Technical Sciences I. Jebashvili (1961-72), Acad. R. Dvali (1972-85), Dr. of Technical Sciences, Corresponded Member of Academy, Prof. I.Jebashvili (1985-98), Acad. R. Adamia (1998-2006).
    Since 2006 Prof. Tamaz Natriashvili is the Director of the Institute.
    The R. Dvali Institute of Machine Mechanics is the only scientific-research institute in Georgia having a machine building profile where fundamental and applied research works are carried out on urgent problems of machine building science.
    There are 2 scientific sections: Heat Power Engineering and Machine Dynamics, where are united 7 scientific departments. There are also auxiliary departments.
    Scientific themes of the Institute are united in 2 priority trends of fundamental research of the Georgian Academy of Sciences: “Problems of calculation of mechanical systems dynamic processes and rational planning” and “Scientific-technical problems to increase efficiency of mobile machines and thermal engines”.
    Fundamental and applied research works are carried out in the Institute on the following scientific problems:
  • Reliability and durability of machines.
  • Mechanics of machine systems and mechanisms (dynamics and oscillations);
  • Machine plants, mathematical simulation of the processes taking place there and development of calculation optimal methods;
  • Perfection of the theories of mobile machines and thermal engines;
  • Working out the operation of methods of heat power industry plants on alternative fuel and corresponding systems;
  • Creation of the wear resistant and corrosion resistant coating and composite materials;
  • Working out of the engineer methods of rational planning and calculation of heavy machines and equipment;
  • Working out of the automotive control systems of multidrive machine plants.
        The laboratories are equipped with necessary experimental gear, there are engine test beds (with power 16-250 kW), for testing dynamometric and vibration techniques, plants and equipment for testing of materials’ quality.
        In the Institute are created: a special automobile of mountain modification, a tractor-slope rover, a mobile machine acting model, mobile machines automotive control systems that can be used at agricultural works as well as in war and special machines for extreme conditions. In the Institute are also created, made and tested the small sized tractor of original small power two and three cylinder diesels.
        At present there are 94 persons in the Institute, among them are 34 Scientists, one Academician of Georgian Academy of Science, 12 Doctors of Sciences.
        There is a post-graduate course with three post-graduate students, 3 competitors from Turkey. In 1994-2004 3 scientific workers of the Institute defended Candidate and 6 Doctor theses.
        Till 1998 in the Institute was functioning the specialized board awarding scientific degrees.
        In 1994-2004 by the budget financing 39 scientific researches were carried out and by grant financing - 24 projects, and by the financing of Georgian Scientific and Technology Department – 1 Project. The Institute along with the E.Andronikashvili Institute of Physics performed Project G-470 of the International Science and Technology Center.
        Till 1992 it was issued the collection “Machine Mechanics”. The Institute holds traditional International (earlier the All-Union) Conferences (on vibrotechnics, mobile machines and thermal engines). The last International Conference was held in the memory of Acad. M. Khvingia in 1999 in “Machine Dynamics and Strength”.
        In 1994-2004 the scientific workers of the Institute published 245 scientific articles, 4 monographs, 8 manuals, took out 29 patents, made 9 claims on invention.
        Two scientists were rewarded with the N. Nikoladze Prize, one work – with “Georgian Technical Intellect” Prize and Diploma. Two scientific workers of the Institute were decorated with order of Honor and order of Vakhtang Gorgasali.
